CURRICULUM ALIGNMENT FOR RETENTION AND TRANSITION AT EASTERN (CARTE)

CARTE was started at Eastern Kentucky University in November 2010 in order to align the Kentucky Core Academic Standards to key University courses, which for Phase I were deemed to be those in General Education and Teacher Preparation.  Organizationally, Eastern began by placing CARTE under the auspices of the University’s nationally recognized Teaching & Learning Center (TLC).  An Executive Professional Learning Community was created that included the two co-directors of the TLC and two prominent members of the College of Education.  This PLC then developed a SuperPLC that consisted of these four members plus one representative from each of five areas:  Teacher Preparation, English/Reading, Mathematics, Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences.  Continuing this embedded PLC structure, each representative became the facilitator of a twelve-faculty member PLC.  By 30 December 2011, these five PLCs will have completed the alignment of 31 (53%) of the key course syllabi, but the funding of Phase I will have expired and CARTE will still have 28 more aligned syllabi to complete.  However, if CARTE were to expand its alignment process to include all General Education and Teacher Preparation courses, it would need to complete 111 syllabi (additionally, CARTE could align the nine syllabi of Eastern’s developmental courses in reading, mathematics, and English).
